No.58

Another 40 second scene. Beyond straightforward, it’s Halloran flying in a plane, asking a stewardess the time.

Semiotically, the color palette reflects Danny and the carpet surrounding Room 237 and the sounds are carried over from a fight between Wendy and Jack.

American History/Culture

Continental: Idiomatic

1. Forming or belonging to a continent."continental Antarctica"

2. coming from or characteristic of mainland Europe."traditional continental cuisine"
3.pertaining to the 13 original colonies of the US."in 1783 the officers and men of the Continental forces had little to celebrate"

Human shrieks, moans, trills reflects A2, A9

in both the American History (ghosts needing to be heard, ‘ghosts’ serving as painful memories as well as literal ghosts)

Domestic Abuse:

Human shrieks, moans, trills reflects A2, A9

Within the context of the Abuse Narrative, it stands for cycles repeating.

The Maze:

Kubrick as Unreliable Narrator:

TIme:

The title card for the chapter is 8am, and Halloran is given a concert reference for that time. Meaning that this scene is happening “in real time”.

Also interesting: The Torrance’s get time mixed up, but Halloran (and the viewer through him) are given concrete references for time.

Color Palette reflection:

Continental’s branding colors are red and gold

Ghost Story:

Human shrieks, moans, trills reflects A2, A9

in both the American History (ghosts needing to be heard, ‘ghosts’ serving as painful memories, as well as literal ghosts.

Cabin Fever:

Halloran has access to freedom and travel.

No.44

The color palette within the plane is the same as the carpet, including Halloran’s suit jacket, shirt and tie. The cup of orange juice mimics the tennis ball.  The color palette reflection shows Hallorans’ concern stems from this moment.

Halloran’s Status

Halloran’s means and abilities contrasted to that of the Torrance’s. Not only is Halloran able to hop on a plane the next morning, he does so in the face of airports being closed all of the difficulties mentioned in A48 on the news.

Halloran as Spiritual Father to Danny:

Halloran has shown (and continues to show) how he acts out of care and protection for Danny.

Jack acts solely to harm Danny and protect himself.

No.17 Compared to No.9 (Where Halloran offers a treat and Jack offers nothing but snark when Danny tells him he’s hungry)

No.19 Compared to No.41- Danny is guarded but open, compared to No.41 where Danny is terrified.

No.49 Compared to No.50. Halloran acts out of concern, Jack acts out of defensiveness .

No.54 Compared to No.53  Halloran connects with the ranger, Jack connects with his rage-self.

No.56 Compared to No.55, Halloran reconnects with the ranger (and gives the viewer a time stamp in reality), whereas Jack disconnects the radio (and perhaps, his last remaining tether to reality).

No.78 Compared to No.79.

This camera establishes the external shot of the airplane and cuts to the interior.

The interior of the plane mimics the color palette of No.44’s color palette.

Continental Airplane

Halloran

The high pitched tones, heartbeat, and wailing are deafening. It’s an indicator of what’s on Halloran’s mind.
