No.83

Wendy walks through Jack’s path of destruction. First stepping through Jack's path from No.51 then Halloran’s slain body from No.77/No.78.

American History/Culture:

Artifacts in the display cases:

Absorbing a culture through violence and showing the remnants as trophies.

Having the the cultural artifacts and the black and white photos create a visual metaphor: Cultures ‘at odds’ with each other.

Domestic abuse:

In Halloran’s slain body, Wendy sees what could have been her.

The Maze:

Kubrick as Unreliable Narrator:

Wendy is comes from The Green Hallway, into an adjacent one coming into The Lobby. She essentially does a loop around, going right back to The Green Hallway, where Danny was hiding from Jack .

The plaid two-seater couch, the artwork, the double doors as The Elevator will all be recreated in No.87.

Colors:

The composition of greens and blue around Wendy create an almost archetypal expression of her character.

Halloran is reduced to red, and in the Maze sequences, Danny and Jack will be reduced to blacks and whites.

In doing this, Wendy reflects the initial shot in the ocean and the Earth.

Pattern:

The green Native American blanket (and the Medicine Man symbol it contains), her shirt (which is Jack’s shirt) and that Native American pattern are versions of each other: the things Wendy has taken on have been to her detriment.

Furniture as People:

Wendy matching furnishings is something that happens a few times.

“Great Party Isn’t It?”

At once, this question to Wendy reflects:

1) Euphemism around a hunting party.

The inclusion of a trophy case and the artifacts within it, along with the red landscape portrait shown No.51, combines the messaging around culture-as trophy.  All of this communicates “human version” of a hunting party— which is essentially what’s happening with Jack and Danny in the Hedge Maze right now.

2) The fantasy and the reality.

Her optimism smacking her right in the face. Nobody’s having a real good time(No.4). They aren’t having a good party.(No.15)

Artwork:

Two trees: A5:i110

As Wendy runs to the exit, there is a picture of two trees on the right.

In No.87, this same picture will be on the left side, at the far end across The Elevator.

Wendy’s Trail of Awareness:

Ghost Story:

Seeing a ghost with his head cracked open gives a sense of “doors opened” from the other side.

He’s also ambiguously cast similar to Delbert Grady and the Maitre D.

Cabin Fever:

Wendy’s now joined the hallucination party.

Scene Reflection:

No.51

After the argument in the WWLQ, Jack comes through this space to encounter the balloons and streamers.

No.77/78

In mimicking Wendy’s path to his death, Wendy sees what could have been her.

No.72

Reflects the cyclical moment of Danny escaping out of the window, only to be running right near there— while Jack is chasing him.

No.87

Wendy will be surrounded by a different set of red walls.

The pillars of The Lobby & Halloran’s body create the same visual ‘red’ as The Elevator + Blood.

No.87

Similar to No.51 how the camera backs away from the character as they walk through the space, it stops as Wendy sees Halloran— much like how the camera stopped when Jack saw the streamers and balloons.

Wendy snaps to the left to anticipate the “Great Party Isn’t It?” and the camera then “chases her” back through to where she came, The Green Hallway.

Wendy’s silhouette into black against the double doors styled as The Elevator sets us up for No.87 and Wendy walking through the red hallway. (i1878 ,i2038)

                         WENDY

X            Danny!

The only dialogue we’ve heard for multiple scenes is Danny’s name being called out — from one parent to help him, and from another trying to kill him.

                         WENDY

            Oh!

X                         INJURED GUEST

            Great party, isn't it?

The scene begins in silence and then sound of wind can be heard.

As Wendy witnesses Halloran’s body, Utrenja II: Ewangelica plays, The ‘sting’ of percussion that hits hard, is done so to accentuate awareness and the reality of the situation, and the immediate danger they are all in.
