7-Up:

The stacks of 7-UP are at once a color reference and a reference to its creation. 7-UP used to be a mood-stabilizing soda as it contained lithium citrate. It was used to counteract a night full of drinking and advertised as a hangover cure.



The Maze

Kubrick as Unreliable Narrator:

Jack as a hotel worker much like the men we see doing their job. 


Watson as Jack’s shadow self

Kubrick has the characters walk past, and then in front of, the camera— causing Watson to eclipse Jack as the characters walk off. 


Euphemism & Idiom:

The pipes are red, white, and blue and black

Euphemism: Red, white and blue are signifiers of America

Idiom: Black and Blue is a signifier of bruises, being beaten up.
