No.89

Wendy finally makes it outside and Danny finally makes it out of The Hedge Maze.

American History/Culture:

How we, as Americans, treat women:

Harshly, dismissively, but when they try to take a stand, society tries to rope them back in.

Jack calling out for Wendy after everything that’s happened continues this push/pull dynamic we’ve seen:

as she asks him for company after she serves him breakfast(No.24), after she asks about what he wants for dinner (no.31). How he talks about her to Lloyd and how he talks to her when she shows up (No.47)
How he responds to her concerns about their shared responsibilities as parents (no.50), demanding that he pay attention to him and only his needs(No.64), and how he manipulates her and sabotages her, his, and their son's safety.(No.65)

Red, White, Blue:

The Snowcat, the robe, the snow/exterior.

Domestic abuse:

How Jack treats Wendy, his wife:

Harshly, dismissively, and she barely stand up to him.

Jack’s lack of brain power, compared to Danny’s intelligence:

Because Jack’s so focused on rage and killing Danny, he’s unable to use the very tool (an axe) in a way that it’s intended (he’s in a maze of plant matter).

Because Jack’s been chasing Danny, it created a pathway — allowing Danny to run out quickly.

The Maze:

Kubrick as Unreliable Narrator:

Wendy stops in front of Halloran’s snowcat which is in front of the bathroom window.

It is Wendy’s reaction to Danny that provides the viewer the relief of Danny finding safety.

The entrance to the maze is different than as established by A14, A26.

Halloran’s path to The Overlook creates the path to follow out— same as Danny’s foot prints within The Hedge Maze.

Scene Reflection:

No.72

Halloran stops right under the window, interrupting Jack and Wendy.

No.66

Wendy runs outside

“This place is such an enormous maze, I feel like I have to leave a trail of breadcrumbs every time I come in”
