No.28 is an external establishing shot of the hotel, taken during late evening. We hear a wolf howling, signifying the wilderness where the Torrance’s now live, and there is a visual indication of the distance between the family (shown by the lit windows in separate parts of the hotel).

“Make Every Indian A Tree” 

Relating to both the trees and the Native American blankets that line the walls, this line is a quote from General Amherst to his (someone) giving the order to give the infested blankets to the Native Americans. In the letter, there is the promise to “make every Indian a tree”.

The wolf call reflects No.4’s dog bark, as a direct reflection from “civilization” to “wilderness”, as well as foreshadow No.72 and Jack’s play as Big Bad Wolf.
