No.85

The final path through the hallway to The Lobby, Wendy encounters skeletons and cobwebs in a darkened space.

American History/Culture:

The messaging here is conceptual: both skeletons in the closet within The Overlook (and America) and the Torrance family.

No.10 +No.53

The champagne and the streamers and tuxedos speak to the luxurious party of A53, but the dresses are more casual and streamers are yellow and purple, so this becomes amix of A53 - the “best” people and the regulars.

Both are in charge of what happens to this country.

Domestic abuse:

The messaging here is conceptual: both skeletons in the closet within The Overlook (and America) and the Torrance family.

The Maze aspect of the hotel is semiotic metaphor for Abuse and American History: when things go awry, you don’t know which way is up.

The Maze:

Kubrick as Unreliable Narrator:

The Lobby has been shown prominently and Wendy’s “come full circle” with it.

The messaging here is conceptual: both skeletons in the closet within The Overlook (and America) and the Torrance family.

The last time we saw Wendy she runs towards Green Hallway- completely in a different direction from where she’s shown in A85.

Kubrick removes all sense of place and connection to metaphorically link the external Hedge Maze sequences with Jack and Danny to the internal space of The Overlook and the things Wendy encounters.

Skeletons foreshadowing No.91

The sheet on the couches is a signifier of death.

Horror Movie Trope:

The cobwebs and skeletons signifying age and classic “haunting”.

Colors:

Yellow:

The shadow and yellow of Jack’s eyes are the shadow and the gold wallpaper in No.85.

Black + White:

The scenes with Danny and Jack are now essentially in black and white, setting us up for No.91.

Ghost Story:

The cobwebs and skeletons signifying age and classic “haunting”.

A direct “reality” reflection of A53. These aren’t party goers, they’re dead.

Wendy sees them “as they are”, while Jack sees them as they used to be.

Cabin Fever:

Wendy’s seeing ghosts because of stress and not being able to leave the hotel.

Scene Reflection:

No.22

Wendy walks through this same space with a food cart to bring Jack breakfast in bed.

No.78

Halloran walks through this space, encountering Jack with an axe.

No.83 is this space shown from the opposite direction.

Halloran’s body is the main focal point, and yet in No.85, the space is so blacked out, Halloran’s body is not shown or seen.
