No.88

Jack and Danny’s maze sequences come to an end, with Jack turning further into darkness and Danny turning towards the light.

American History/Culture:

Weak men attacking their future generations is unfortunately common in American History.

Darkness as Metaphor:

Reflects the first shot of the film and how the left side is deep in shadow.

Domestic abuse:

Jack’s lack of brain power, compared to Danny’s intelligence:

Because Jack’s so focused on rage and killing Danny, he’s unable to use the very tool (an axe) in a way that it’s intended (he’s in a maze of plant matter).

Because Jack’s been chasing Danny, it created a pathway — allowing Danny to run out quickly.

The Maze:

Kubrick as Unreliable Narrator:

The path of Jack following Danny creates that thread allows Danny to run out quickly.

Ghost Story:

Jack is fulfilling his promise made to the ghost, Delbert Grady, in No.53, No.69.

Cabin Fever:

Jack is doing this because he hasn’t been able to leave the hotel.

Scene Reflection:

No.73

Danny hiding in the maze waiting for Jack compared Danny hiding from Jack within The Green Hallway.

Danny’s Triking Sequences:

Seeing him trike through the hotel becomes “practice”:
