Charles Grady, Delbert Grady
There is only Delbert Grady in the original source novel. Yet in the film we’re told about Charles Grady during the interview, yet introduced to a Delbert Grady in the Gold Room.
Ullman tells us of Charles Grady of 1970 in No.5. We meet a Delbert Grady at a 1920’s party in No.53. Kubrick asks the viewer to accept the connection while delivering information that points in the opposite direction.
The same mechanism appears when Danny asks about Room 237 in No.19: his question asks us to fill a gap, even though Room 237 was absent from the visions shown in No.6. See Semiotic Splice.
