Theme

Dick Halloran Is Head Chef at the Overlook.

In the source novel, Halloran’s back story is fleshed out the supernatural component to the story (and the connection between Halloran and Danny) is much more pronounced.

The character is styled similarly in the source novel as the film— professionally dressed, warm and approachable, middle aged man. Scatman Crothers delivers all of that perfectly.

Halloran’s main role in the film is one of spiritual father to Danny. Danny opens up to Halloran in a much more sincere and honest way than we see him in No.4 or No.7.

Halloran is also shown as wealthy, having a summer home in Florida. The furnishings in his space are amalgamated from the hotel (Ullman’s Office, The Gold Room) and from The Torrance’s Boulder Space—but much nicer versions. This feeds into the race and class dynamics, connecting to Grady referring to Halloran as a “N***er Cook”.

Because of his wealth and resources (human help counts as resources), he’s able to fly into a snow storm, finagle a snowcat rental from a friend, and drive into danger.

It his Halloran who breaks Jack’s concentration from killing Wendy, and Halloran’s snowcat is how Wendy and Danny are able to escape.

As The Help

Even though he’s the Head Chef, Ullman still treats him with false deference signifying he’s still just an employee. Halloran, Wendy, and Danny tour the kitchen while Ullman, Jack, and Watson continue the tour in an unknown space.

As Danny’s Spiritual Father

Compare how sincere and open Danny is with Halloran in No.19 compared to No.4 where he’s not even his real “Tony” to Wendy and No.7 where he just flat out rejects the Doctor/Social Worker.

Generational Gifts/The Shining

Halloran’s Shine abilities and Tony (both in his onset and his purpose in Danny’s life) are very different.

Halloran’s abilities seem to be natural and something cultivated into a positive attribute. Tony is a defense mechanism, an inner voice of awareness in order to secure his protection and survival.

Jack shows to have this ability as well, but the delivery is a murderous guide, but definitely brought out for Jack’s survival.

“The Head Chef”

Halloran identifies himself as the Overlook’s head chef. Jack has just complained about menial work, yet Grady will demean Halloran with a racist slur in No.53. The difference between his professional position and how he is described continues the Race and Class reading.
