Danny as Bugs Bunny:
Danny called ‘Doc’
(From the source novel)
(to Danny)
Do you like lamb, Doc?
Mr. Halloran,
WENDY (CONT'D)
how did you know we called him 'Doc'?
Beg pardon?
Doc. You called Danny 'Doc' twice
just now.
I did?
Yeah. We call him Doc sometimes,
you know, like in the Bugs Bunny
cartoons. But how did you know that?
Well I guess I probably heard you
call him that.
36.
Well, it's possible, but I honestly
don't remember calling him that
since we've been with you.
It’s interesting that a pet name the Torrance’s have for their son is not said by them, but by Halloran- a stranger Danny just met. Yes it shows the man’s talent for reading minds, but it also speaks to the level of intimacy the two characters will experience that Danny does not experience from his parents.
Well anyway, he looks like a Doc,
doesn't he?
(clicks his tongue)
Me ah - what's up, Doc?
Halloran mimics Bugs Bunny, which is seen as
a) way to break the tension/weasel out of the lie
b) a way to connect with Danny
c) cementing Halloran as Danny’s ‘place holder’ (as the toy in No.26 is in the spot where Halloran will be killed /viewed by Wendy, essentially taking the place of Danny No.83)
