Catcher in the rye
The significance of Wendy reading “The Catcher in the Rye” (aside from the fact that it’s brown), deals with the theme of innocence and shielding youth from the complexities of adulthood/life.
Its placement is ironic because Wendy has the exact role to shield Danny’s innocence, yet continues to ignore that because she loves Jack and lives in the fantasy of who Jack can be.
It is in direct conflict to what Danny will experience in The Overlook as well as what’s foreshadowed with Summer of 42.
Written by J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye centers around a teenage boy struggling to come to terms with the complexities of growing up and the seeming phoniness of the adult world.
