Loser Has to Keep America Clean

Wendy’s line is read here as an echo of Keep America Beautiful’s “Crying Indian” advertisement, first aired on Earth Day in 1971. The association links Indigenous representation with responsibility for cleaning up damage caused by others.

That contrast also applies to Wendy’s domestic role. In No.26, her braided pigtails and red, white, and blue clothing bring the cultural imagery into the playful chase with Danny. Their play later contrasts with Jack’s violent pursuit of his son.

The campaign connection supports the larger reading of American culture, environmental harm, and who is made responsible for the mess. The film does not explicitly name the advertisement.

The Loser Has to Keep America Clean

Wendy wears vibrant red, white, and blue, while the trash cans carry American flags. Her line, “The loser has to keep America clean, how’s that?”, refers to the Keep America Beautiful campaign featuring a crying Indian and modern America’s lack of care in relation to littering.

The cultural-relativism reading connects “losers” with Native Americans and the responsibility for cleaning up after others. It also applies to Wendy’s role and women’s work. Her buttoned check shirt, bandana, and booties evoke a 1950s or children’s cowboy outfit.
