Theme

“I Think He Did It to Himself”

No.50 contains a lot of gaslighting, manipulation, and layers of abuse, but few as apparent as Jack’s “explanation” for Danny’s bruises. Danny could not have caused those shapes on his face with his own hand, Wendy knows this, but is unable to “see it” in her face. It is Jack’s attempt at control over the situation.

Interestingly whether it’s intended or not, it could reflect Jack’s actions and behaviors that result in Jack’s own death.

“He Did It to Himself”: Jack’s Own Fate

The accusation reflects Jack’s own choices leading toward his death. The Abuse, American History, and Maze readings locate his destruction in his actions, complicating the fatalism offered by ghosts or cabin fever.
