Danny + Jack’s Work

In No.7, we hear Wendy tell a story about how Jack dislocated Danny’s shoulder because he had “scattered Jack’s papers all over the floor.” Right away we’re being told a lot of information.

The Incident is also told from Jack’s point of view in No.47: “The little fucker had scattered my papers.”

And yet, in No.23, the first time we see Danny “playing,” he’s making laps around where Jack is shown working (the Colorado Lounge).

The second time, he’s triking on the 2nd floor, the upper perimeter of where Jack is working, and will be shown working in the following scene.

Not only does Danny play around Jack’s workspace, it’s a point of contention with some history. Danny and Jack’s work are inseparable.

Emotional Factors

Doctor: “Mrs. Torrance, I don’t think you have anything to worry about. I’m quite sure there is nothing physically wrong with Danny.”

Wendy: “But eh what was the matter with him?”

Doctor: “Mrs. Torrance, most of the time these episodes with kids are never explained. They are brought on by emotional factors, and they rarely occur again.”

Reflects Halloran’s “Burnt Toast” analogy: it is accurate for general situations, but in this specific instance of the Torrances, the problems are real and beyond just “the ghosts/smells of the past.” The pains and struggles are in the present because the ghosts of the past have not been dealt with or moved on from.
