Fairy Tales

There’s two ways to see Fairy Tales as a theme— one as a conceptual organizer that helps understand the maze-like nature of the hotel itself, the dead woman who turns from seductress to grotesque attacker, and a hotel that hypnotizes and transfixes to a man’s demise.

There’s also the aspect of Fairy Tales that deals with fantasy tied to denial and the false optimism—trusting in things that are actually harmful.

Sentences like “This place is such an enormous maze, I feel like I’ll have to leave a trail of breadcrumbs every time I come in” is an indicator of danger. It’s a reference to Hansel and Gretel being almost-eaten by a witch. No.48 could deliver this pay off.

The false optimism aspect is represented by the flowers and butterflies, shown most often in the bedroom space. It’s make-believe and akin to an ostrich’s head in the sand. Where there are florals and flowers it can be assumed that this is the messaging.

<No.4/Image 98: (not a TRUE reference to fairytales but does fit inline with the fairytales/reality as violent juxtaposition:)
