Ceremonial Spaces

A visually defined space— most notably in The Lobby and Room 237— framing the area where things go awry.

Halloran’s death takes place in a banded square in front of The Lobby and shown in front of The Cashier, creating the message that this death is a sacrifice to greed. The band is red and black.

Room 237 has this beautiful woman stepping out of the bath and into a marked space where Jack meets her. While they kiss, the reflection shows the reality of Jack’s choice.
