Tool as Weapon

In No.62, Wendy chooses a baseball bat (a toy used as weapon)

In No.65 when the threat has escalated, she chooses a a knife (tool as weapon).

Somewhere between No.69 and No.71, Jack finds an axe. While his strength is assumed to be 'strength' or at least 'force'; Jack is equipped with the very tool he would need to power through the hedge maze- literally. An axe. His mental capabilities are taken over by anger and rage and he is therefore unable to think things through logically.

Tools Become Weapons

Wendy’s knife takes the defensive place of the bat in No.64. Jack’s axe breaches the door; she cuts his reaching hand. The attack escalates the earlier staircase confrontation, and I connect the cut with the Castration theme.

The Hand Through the Door

No.72 reflects the bathroom-door image in No.41 and Jack’s earlier reaching hand in No.72. The repeated detail connects entry, violated boundaries, and Wendy’s defensive response.
