Providing a sense of grounding, safety, and normalcy, brown shows up when things are presenting as themselves normal to the point of boring or when things are intense in an attempt to calm them.
On a conceptual level (and tying into the American History Narrative), it can be understood that brown (as in brown people) are on the receiving end of the violence. It is the brown couches that receive the blood gushing from the elevator.
