thematic reflection
Danny opens up to Halloran about Tony, more sincerely than to either his mom or the doctor.
How long have you been able to do it?

Why don't you want to talk about it?
CUT TO:
M.C.S. DANNY
I'm not supposed to.
CUT TO:
M.C.S. HALLORAN
Who says you ain't supposed to?
CUT TO:
M.C.S. DANNY
Tony.
CUT TO:
M.C.S. HALLORAN
Who's Tony?
CUT TO:
Halloran’s Shine abilities and Tony (both in his onset and his purpose in Danny’s life) are very different.
Halloran’s abilities seem to be natural and something cultivated into a positive attribute. Tony is a defense mechanism, an inner voice of awareness in order to secure his protection and survival.
Jack shows to have this ability as well, but the delivery is a murderous guide, but definitely brought out for Jack’s survival.
Tony is the little boy that lives in my mouth

an innocent/child like understanding of the inner voice of the self
Compare with the scene No.7—D:Image 174, how Danny handles the very same question “”Does Tony tell you to do things?”

No. It's the little boy that lives
in my mouth.

if you were to open your mouth now,
could I see Tony?

No.

Why not?

M.C.S. DANNY
Because he hides.

Where does he go?
CUT TO:
M.C.S. DANNY
To my stomach.

M.C.S. DOCTOR
Does Tony ever tell you to do things?
M.C.S. DANNY

I don't want to talk about Tony
anymore.
Halloran already knows about Tony through Halloran’s similar gift/abilities, so Danny opens up to him more. Danny gives the same answer “Tony is the little boy who lives in my mouth”, but Wendy interjects and ‘explains’ Tony. Here, Danny is able to be more open and honest and more comes from the conversation.
A strange thematic reflection appeared as I thought about No.7. Danny speaks his truth to the Dr, but Wendy interferes and it makes it no longer true! No.53 “She.. interferes”. Originally I thought it was simply a euphemistic approach to Wendy stopping Jack from handling Danny as Jack saw fit- but now I also see it as she impedes information from coming out.

M.C.S. HALLORAN
Is Tony the one that tells you
things?

Yes.

It's like I go to sleep, and he
shows me things but when I wake up,
I can't remember everything.

Danny was shown something about the Overlook, No.6
M.C.S. HALLORAN
Has Tony ever told you anything
about this place? About the
Overlook Hotel?
CUT TO:
43.
I don't know.
CUT TO:
M.C.S. HALLORAN.
Now think real hard, Doc. Think.
CUT TO:
Maybe he showed me something.
CUT TO:
M.C.S. HALLORAN.
Try to think what it was.
thematic reflection:
Danny is able to divert conversation.
Mr. Halloran, are you scared of
this place?
No.6 [ in the “are you scared of this place”— because danny is]
in the “Danny has ‘equal footing’ in conversations department:
No.4 “Do you really want to go live in that hotel for the winter?”
No.41 “You would never hurt Mommy and me, would you?”
Halloran serves as a spiritual father for Danny.
From the shared generational gifts of psychic connection, Halloran also shows more care and concern for Danny than Jack.
While Jack actively works to kill his son, Halloran flies into danger to save Danny.
This connection is communicated visually as well: In No.19, Kubrick has Danny and Halloran wearing the same colors as posed in the same position.
