Vanity could be referring to the piece of furniture, the attribute of caring how one looks, and the futility of ‘in vain’ , which ultimately reflects Jack and his concerns over his job and reputation and efforts to kill his family.
The objects on the vanity are standard for the piece of furniture: rollers, jewelry box, nail polish, hair brush, skin creams. Signifying that Wendy participates in these activities and products, assumed to improve her appearance, but we don’t see her ‘before and after’, or using the products.
This is traditionally a female space (shown in No.24, No.41 with items like makeup, hair rollers, jewelry) but it is the male’s perspective and decisions that show to be vain.
