Theme

Tony

Depending on which facets you’re looking at, Tony could be a number of things.

He could be Danny’s imaginary friend, crafted because Danny’s isolated from school and isolated from no children around him at home.

He could be a psychic ability, a gift that allows him to know things beyond a human’s normal ability.

He could be an ego defense mechanism, crafted because Danny is in danger. Both parents harm Danny; Jack through his outright violence, jealousy, and aggression, and Wendy due to her inability to leave Jack.

for “Who Is Tony”

Having Danny describe him to the Dr. / Social Worker as “the little boy who lives in his mouth,” who hides in his stomach communicates he comes from fear, or at least from he core of Danny.

Who Is Tony

Danny’s Tony here is not the true “Tony.” It is done for Wendy’s benefit, as a deflection.

Lying. Tony not engaging Wendy honestly (as we’ll see in No.6 and No.19) sets the tone of Danny’s inability to fully trust his parents.

Who Tony really is to Danny, a part of Kubrick as Unreliable Narrator.
