Extension and Compression is a name for a device describing how Kubrick manipulates meaning.
Compression is when Kubrick establishes a structure, a rhythm or a composition of space in one scene (or sequence of scenes), and when they repeat, they condense into meaning.
It applies to chapters like in A Month Later, Tuesday, and Thursday
and it applies to scenes- like No.7, No.45, and No.50
It is played out within the last third of No.65.
A way you can think about this is when you learn a dance routine. You spend the time learning one move, then you spend time learning the next move. Then you spend time learning the two moves together and so on. Eventually by the 5th move, you don’t have to relearn move 1-4. Your mind has comprised the moves already submitted to memory. Kubrick uses this in his message building.
Extension is when Kubrick shows you a space in one scene and then shows the same space but expands upon the composition.
