Blaxploitation in Hallorans Condo

The photos in Halloran’s bedroom relate to women’s status, ownership, and race and class dynamics.

While Halloran is shown as good to Wendy and Danny, ultimately giving up his life for their survival, he’s shown to inhabit the same sexist and subjugational tendencies of other men.

The House Negro- showing to be of one group but betraying that group to gain favor in the ‘ruling’ group. Black people are just as capable of holding up White Supremacy/Patriarchy.

The outright slave fetishim in the image above his bed reflects the modern Blaxploitation styled imagery ahead of him. The fetishism stems from the imagery— a sexual slave with classic slave/primitive imagery (the chains, the loin cloth) combined with the modern day fetishism with the large afro and the pose of both women.

The pose of the woman in the modernized sex image will be the pose of the woman rising out of the bathtub for Jack.

Fetishism, Ownership & Subjugation

The portraits combine sexualized imagery with chains, a loincloth, and a large afro. The reading connects the images with blaxploitation, slavery, and women’s status. Halloran’s care for Wendy and Danny coexists with the same sexist imagery displayed by other men. The supplied “Uncle Tom” reading asks how members of a subordinated group can also uphold the ruling group’s racial and patriarchal systems.
