Jack’s Drinking and His Work

During No.7, when Wendy is talking about how Jack dislocated Danny’s shoulder, she says “My husband had been drinking, so he wasn’t in the greatest of moods that night”.

This tells you all you need to know about Jack’s drinking.

Some people drink to celebrate and have fun, and maybe that’s true for Jack— but what’s been established here is that he definitely drinks to stop a bad mood.

Anticipation Within the Composition

The approach to the desk and the alignment with the typewriter make the coming discovery part of the composition. Compare No.46, where the camera waits at the end of the Gold Room hallway for Jack to enter. After No.7 and No.15, drinking has become an expected response to his problems. Here, the framing prepares us to encounter the work around which the family’s problems have gathered.
