Not as Modern as We Think

The Shining was billed as “A tale of modern horror”, and there are a few references that Kubrick made to show the 1980’s aren’t as “modern” as they’d like to think.

The reference to whether Wendy can drive, showing Wendy and Halloran the kitchen but not Jack. Grady taunting about Wendy’s strength and wether Jack has control over his wife. There are tools shown in the kitchen that were used in the colonial age.

The racism— overt and casual. Calling Native Americans losers, all denote an old way of thinking still operating in a “modern” world.

Get the Cows in the Barn

“Get the cows in the barn” interrupts the modern travel report with the practical demands of rural life. The line supports the reading that society is not as removed from those older dependencies as it likes to imagine.
