Man’s Nature

We are shown a few archetypal takes on “man’s nature”. We’ve got the weak man’s nature in Jack’s alcoholism and violence, Grady’s in control and austerity, and we’ve got the “higher man’s nature” in Halloran’s protection and softness.

Societally, we have man’s nature being attributed to man’s conquering nature in the fishing photos, the settling of the hotel in the middle of a gorgeous view. We have control over our future generations through violence and force. We have escapism from the responsibilities they’ve created for themselves.

While these are the trappings of western patriarchal structures and do not reflect all societies which have males, they speak very clearly to the American/Western way of life.

The woman Jack eyes has a sweater whose stripes reflect the couch from No.12. Since stripes reflect “what is natural”, this can be understood to mean “man’s nature as behavior”: in No.12 it’s violent and in No.13 it’s sexual.
