Emotional Factors

During No.7, the Doctor/Social worker gives a direct correlation to what we’ve just seen in No.6, much like Ullman has done with “Cabin Fever” in No.5.

She speaks about how nothing is “physically wrong” with Danny, that sometimes kids put themselves into a “self induced trance” (Like.. No.54 or No.72?) and that they’re brought on by “emotional factors”.

In this way, it also reflects Halloran’s “Burnt Toast” explanation, in that what’s being said IS accurate for general situations, but in this specific instance for the Torrances …it’s not fully correct.

The problems are real and beyond just “ghosts” or “once in a while occurrences”. The pains and struggles (the ghosts) are present because the problems have not been dealt with and healed from the past.

thematic reflection; EMOTIONAL FACTORS!

Doctor: “Mrs. Torrance, I don’t think you have anything to worry about. I’m quite sure there is nothing physically wrong with Danny.”

Wendy: “But eh what was the matter with him?”

Doctor: “Mrs. Torrance, most of the time these episodes with kids are never explained. They are brought on by emotional factors, and they rarely occur again.”

Reflects Halloran’s “Burnt Toast” analogy: it is accurate for general situations, but in this specific instance of the Torrances, the problems are real and beyond just “the ghosts/smells of the past.” The pains and struggles are in the present because the ghosts of the past have not been dealt with or moved on from.
