Setting

The Lobby

The Lobby (at least post The Interview and Closing Day), is treated like the Torrance’s living space.

Toys get spread out, Danny and Wendy watch television, and Jack throws a tennis ball down its halls out of boredom.

It’s also where Jack looms over the model Hedge Maze, sees deflated balloons and pools of streamers, stalks and kills Halloran, Wendy sees skeletons mimicking The Gold Room patrons and the guests from the opening scene, and sheets cover the couches as we pan to see Native American blankets and Jack inside one of the Black and white Photos.

Stylistically, its floor is designed like a checkerboard, intermittently breaking up the Indigenous/Native American symbols with art deco styling. The colors are red, black, gold, with salmon colored pillars topped with Native American symbols wrapped around.

Black and White photos appear in blocks facing The Lobby from the adjacent hallway and leading up the staircase, with Native American blankets appear around the main space.

Themes around this space are:

Conflict and Control: shown through the usage of art deco and Native American imagery, The Black and White Photos and the Native American Blankets, Jack throwing a tennis ball over symbols of Danny, Wendy, and Halloran, and eventually Jack killing Halloran and chasing after Danny to kill him.

Fantasy & Reality: The balloons and the streamers are where Halloran will eventually be killed. The skeletons Wendy witnesses are stand ins for the guests we see Jack interact with (No.53). The symbols of characters in Winnie the Pooh, the Golliwog Doll and the Bugs Bunny doll ON Danny’s trike speak for the 3 real characters that Jack will be harming as the film plays out.
