Normalization of Drugs and Alcohol is an observation about American culture, both within the film and in lived experience. Coffee and cigarettes are so familiar that we often do not think of them as drug use, even though they contain caffeine and nicotine. We can be intensely judgmental about certain drugs while remaining largely blind to others.
