Character

Lloyd

Characters: Lloyd

Lloyd is a bartender spirit (or an amalgamated character that serves as Jack’s bartender) that we meet in The Gold Room for 2 scenes: No.47 and No.53.

Lloyd offers easy one liners, allowing Jack to blow off steam and open up after the fight in No.45. He’s an employee of The Overlook, so he’s dressed in a velvet red tuxedo, matching other employees (bellhop In No.6, attendant in No.3).

Kubrick uses subtle editing to show not only is Lloyd standing in front of a row of mirrors, the camera cuts away so that it’s only a corner of burgundy velvet, reflecting Jack’s burgundy jacket in the frame.

Just like Grady, Lloyd can be a few things depending on the narrative you look to.

He shows up after Jack’s Faustian Bargain— both a Horror Movie Trope and could be a real life “Ghost Request Line” if ever there was one— problem is Kubrick’s rarely that simple. I think Lloyd is the voice of the addict. The enabling voice that says “just one won’t hurt”, or No.5’s “That won’t happen to me”. If Grady serves as Jack’s survival, Lloyd acts as the gatekeeper to Jack’s depths.

Lloyd at the bar

Lloyd’s red velvet jacket identifies him with hotel service and visually links him with Jack. The mirrors behind him matter to the study’s reading of him as an enabling voice.
