Ullman’s Office

Ullman’s Office is a a space that contains an optical illusion, a spatial impossibility, salmon pink walls, and a lot of symbols for expansion, domination, and America.

As we enter it for the first time, we’re shown artwork on either side: on the left, a vibrant and indigenous representation of culture and on the right, literal photographs of the geographic location. This dynamic is one of the “thesis sentences” of The Shining.

The interior of Ullman’s Office, it contains practical things that create conceptual connection. The eagle statue, the map of Colorado, the American Flag, the world maps, the framed photos of sport fishing, the black and white photo on the left (above Jack), the sepia toned photo above Watson— all speak to Manifest Destiny style domination told through images.

The space also contains the radio, a barometer, a barrage of fake plants. The radio and barometer will be reflected within Halloran’s apartment. The fake plants relate to the construction of the environment.

The trees and window would not exist based on the location of the room and the wrap around hallways shown No.18, No.38, No.51, No.77.

The optical illusion is the elevator shown in No.3 would overlap with the space the office takes up.

We see Jack walk towards Ullman's office. Right in front is an elevator, and behind it, a hallway (that we will see Jack walkthrough later in the film). Ullman's office could not possibly showcase a large sun-filled window, and yet here we are.
