With all of the talk of subtext and meaning, it’s important to say yes, the Shining can be viewed as a ghost story. Grady girls, Grady, Lloyd, and all of the guests— not to mention the woman within Room 237 and the tuxedo man / bear costume ghosts— all show up and interact with the characters in their own way. It can also be viewed that the hotel itself is a ghost, a sort of Hotel California like entity that absorbs its guests, shown in No.91’s final shot.
